Opinion: Is N10b really a high price to pay for Watford's Super Eagles striker?
Published: July 27, 2022The ongoing summer transfer window has been a general success for Nigerian players as quite a few have upgraded their clubs in one way or another.
Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey have both left Rangers for Southampton and Ajax respectively while Chidera Ejuke and Taiwo Awoniyi have also joined higher-ranked team and league respectively.
With the window rumbling into the final stages, Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Dennis is still the centre of attention in a transfer merry-go-round. The player and club are both willing for him to leave due to the financial constraints that come with relegation.
However, reports from the English press have suggested that clubs like Nottingham Forest, West Ham, Southampton and Everton are all unwilling to fork out the reported 20 million pounds (approximately N10 billion in Nigerian currency) fee that Watford are requesting for.
However, is 20 million pounds really such a steep price to pay for an experienced and prolific striker like Dennis?
It is important to note that the Nigerian had 16 goal involvements which included ten goals and six assists in a struggling Watford team.
Most surprising that he was able to achieve this in the toughest football environment which is the Premier League whilst having injury setbacks towards the end of the season.
Dennis is also a full Nigerian international and not an inexperienced youngster. In today's market, he may not be well worth 20 million pounds but his value is definitely closer to that as Transfermarkt values him at 14 million Euros.
However, being that his team were relegated, clubs may try to baulk at the price to try and bring Watford's valuation down. It is a popular tactic used by clubs to get players for a lower fee.
