Aston Villa fans question Chukwuemeka omission from Chelsea squad vs Tottenham Hotspur
Published: August 14, 2022
Nigeria-eligible Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka's move to Stamford Bridge has been condemned by a cross section of Aston Villa fans who are still hurt by the decision of the youngster not to renew his contract at Villa Park.
Chukwuemeka who was part of the England U-19 that won the European tournament this summer was not named in Chelsea’s 20-man squad that drew 2-2 with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening.
That elicited reactions from the Villa fans when the Chelsea team was released before the tense game.
The midfield talent completed his £20m move although manager Steven Gerrard admitted that the club desperately wanted him to sign a new deal.
"The door was open for a pathway for Carney, for sure, there was a lot of hard work and attention to try and get him signed up here, but I’m really happy I got the support from the owners, Christian and Johan, and we also needed to set a precedent that no-one is as big as the club or the Academy.
"And if someone isn’t committed or prepared to commit to the club, the supporters and the journey then we have to give them the opportunity to go somewhere," Gerrard had explained.
The Villa fans seemed to buy into Gerrard's opinion about the transfer situation as they questioned why the player was not in the team despite training with the first squad.
As reported by Birmingham Live, the following are the social media reactions of the Villa faithful about their former player.
@_jackavfc: Chukwuemeka still not even in the squad.
@kendoness : Why is Chukwuemeka not even in the subs?
@RH_AVFC: How's that first team football going at Chelsea?
@AVFCJC23: Good to see you making the first team again.
@lvhatbackpack: Chukwuemeka not even there.
@ADR55490411: Looks like 20m wasted if he doesn't even find a place in the squad.
@TomFahy93: Good to see Chukwuemeka involved in the big games."
