'I know how much they love EPL' - Nottingham Forest number 9 vows to make Nigerians proud
Published: August 20, 2022Taiwo Awoniyi has vowed to make Nigerians proud in his first season in the English Premier League.
In a six-year association with Liverpool, the 2013 U17 World Cup winner couldn't play a single game in the topflight due to a work permit obstacle, leading to loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron, Gent, Mainz 05 and Union Berlin, from where he moved to Nottingham Forest in the summer for a then club record fee in the region of 17.5 million pounds.
Awoniyi's place in Nottingham Forest's history books is assured after the Reds number 9 opened the scoring in their first home game in the Premier League for twenty-three years as they beat West Ham United last weekend.
The Nigeria national teamer stated last month that his arrival at the City Ground will attract fans from Africa's most populous nation to the club.
Asked what he meant by the statement, Awoniyi told Bunmi Blair : "I know how much Nigerians love the English Premier League, I know how much they watch the game.
"And for me being here, being a player of Nottingham Forest, and also coming from Nigeria, I just want to make myself and my country proud, and I believe it it all boils down to what I do here so if everything goes well I believe a lot of Nigerians will be following.
"And of course I know all my family and my friends are looking forward to it as well."
Awoniyi and his Nottingham Forest teammates face Everton at Goodison Park on matchday three in the Premier League this afternoon.
