'It's sheer brilliance' - Ex-Super Eagles star hails Arsenal CB for stunning strike, blames Billing
Published: August 20, 2022
English Premier League match commentator and former Nigeria international Efan Ekoku hailed the quality of goal scored by Arsenal central defender William Saliba on Saturday evening in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
Saliba, who had been on loan away from Arsenal since he was bought for £27m, finished off an evening of dominant football by the Gunners who are top of the table for at least 24 hours.
Ekoku on commentary duties with Jim Proudfoot on the Premier League's world feed said the following words on the strike by the France international.
"Well, there's nothing much he can do about that (in reference to the Bournemouth keeper keeping away the ball).
"It's sheer brilliance from Saliba. Xhaka had the wherewithal and the confidence to just to be able to stroke the ball back to him.
"He (Saliba) just needs to strike the ball across the face of the goal. It could be crystal said that he needs to close down the goal quickly.
Ekoku believes Denmark international of Nigerian descent, Philip Billing and one of his teammates had a hand in making Saliba's job easier.
"Philip Billing is walking towards the ball. Anthony as well close to him - and he turns his body back to the ball, the young substitute.
"That for me goes down inside the box. But that was a measured finish, a fantastic goal. The only thing wrong with that is he ran towards the wrong end of the ground.
"The Arsenal fans at the other end of the ground just celebrate in front of anyone. What a finish," Ekoku who was part of Nigeria's victorious 1994 Africa Cup of Nations Super Eagles squad stated.
Arsenal's next game is against Tosin Adarabioyo's Fulham at the Emirates Stadium in London on Saturday, August 27.
