Super Eagles-eligible midfielder receives first senior call-up since joining Chelsea
Published: August 21, 2022
England U19 sensation of Nigerian descent Carney Chukwuemeka is in contention to make his competitive debut for Chelsea's first team on Sunday afternoon.
The former Astom Villa wonderkid has been named among the substitutes for the Premier League meeting against Leeds United at Elland Road - his first senior call-up since his celebrated move to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
Manager Thomas Tuchel has picked Conor Gallagher alongside Jorginho in the centre of midfield.
It is believed that the injury suffered by N'Golo Kante opened the door for Chukwuemeka to be named in the matchday 20.
Chukwuemeka was not in the squad for the opening day win at Everton and was also not involved in the London derby against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.
The Anglo-Austrian-Nigerian central midfielder played his first competitive match for Chelsea as their development squad suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Fulham in a Premier League 2 fixture at Kingsmeadow on August 15.
Should Chukwuemeka make his debut versus Leeds United, he would be following in the footsteps of Nigeria-eligible players including Eddie Newton, Celestine Babayaro, John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Faustino Anjorin who made appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League.
