PL 2 : Chelsea's Anglo-Nigerian midfielder given important minutes in draw vs Man City
Published: August 26, 2022
Carney Chukwuemeka was given important minutes as Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by champions Manchester City in a Premier League 2 clash at Kingsmeadow on Friday evening.
Eleven days after playing his first game for a Chelsea team after his summer transfer from Aston Villa, the 2022 European U19 champion of Nigerian descent made his second start for the Blues.
Deployed as a central midfielder, Chukwuemeka lasted 64 minutes on the pitch before he was replaced by Lewis Hall.
It is believed that Chukwuemeka is building up his match fitness by playing for the development squad ahead of an inevitable first-team debut in the coming weeks.
His chances of sneaking into Chelsea's first team matchday squad have increased following the hamstring injury suffered by N'Golo Kante, who faces at least four weeks on the sidelines.
In this evening's Premier League 2 match, goals by Harvey Vale and Lewis Hall were canceled out by City's
Kian Breckin and Oscar Bobb.
Chukwuemeka had a chance to score his first goal in Chelsea colours on the hour mark but saw his long-range effort go over the bar.
Another player of Nigerian descent, Dire Mebude played the full game for Manchester City.
