Arsenal loanee and Lorient's Moffi joint top Nigerian scorers in Europe's Top 5 Leagues
Published: September 01, 2022
Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun and Lorient striker Terem Moffi are the joint-top scoring players of Nigerian descent in the top five European Leagues comprising the English Premier League, La Liga, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A and French Ligue 1 in the new season.
Balogun and Moffi, who share the same agent, were on target in the latest round of matches in the Ligue 1 on Wednesday, taking their tallies to four goals each in the division - the most by any Nigerian player in the big five European Leagues.
Moffi's brace could not prevent Lorient from suffering a 5-2 loss to Lens at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
Trailing 2-0, the Super Eagle brought the game back to parity with two tap-ins but Lens went on to score three more goals in the second half.
Elsewhere, Balogun continued his outstanding start to life at Stade de Reims by helping them register their first win in this season's Ligue 1 - a 4-2 victory over Angers at Stade Raymond-Kopa.
The Hale End Academy graduate converted a spot kick to make it 3-2 at minute 70 before providing the assist for Reims' fourth goal in the 90th minute.
With the exception of Lyon, Balogun has scored against all the opponents he has faced since joining Reims on loan.
Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Moses Simon (Nantes), Umar Sadiq (Almeria) and David Okereke (Cremonese) are the other Nigerian players to have scored more than once in Europe's top five leagues in the new season.
They have netted twice each for their respective clubs.
