African star rejects Chelsea's opening contract extension offer

African goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has reportedly turned down an initial contract extension offer from Premier League side Chelsea.

The Evening Standard is reporting that Chelsea are making plans to tie down the Senegal shot stopper to a new deal after securing the long term future of Reece James, but preliminary talks were not fruitful.

Chelsea are offering Mendy a new contract, which is less than the wages Kepa Arrizabalaga is receiving.

The Spaniard negotiated his £190,000-a-week contract when he joined Chelsea in 2018 for a world-record fee for a goalkeeper.

The deal that took Mendy to Stamford Bridge saw him replace Kepa as Chelsea's first choice goalkeeper.

The 30-year-old is just one game away from reaching a 100-game milestone for Chelsea,

Mendy was awarded the 2021 Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper prize and played a key role as Senegal won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

As a Chelsea player, he has won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
