'Was absolutely outstanding' - Pundit singles out Jenz for praise despite Celtic's defeat to Leipzig
Published: October 12, 2022
Moritz Jenz was singled out for praise by Scottish football pundit Mark Hendry despite Glasgow Celtic suffering back-to-back defeats to RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League.
Jenz, a fitness doubt due to illness, recovered in time to be named in the starting lineup for the fourth straight game in the Champions League and was one of the few bright sparks for the Hoops.
The German-Nigerian central defender was close to helping Celtic keep a clean sheet as RB Leipzig had to wait until the final fifteen minutes to get their goals.
Former Chelsea man Timo Werner put Celtic in a precarious position at the bottom of Group F when he headed in at the far comer in the 75th minute.
In the 84th minute, a well taken effort from Emil Forsberg, who had come on as a substitute just minutes earlier, doubled the Bundesliga side's advantage.
Football Scotland's Deputy Editor Hendry was impressed by the display of Jenz and highlighted that Celtic's wasteful finishing proved their downfall.
"All the talk before the game was about Cameron Carter-Vickers and no wonder, he’s been excellent for Celtic from day dot.
"But Moritz Jenz was absolutely outstanding tonight and unlucky to lose his clean sheet in the end.
"Really poor finishing has cost #Celtic this tournament," Hendry wrote on Twitter.
Celtic have to find a way to navigate their two final Champions League group games against Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Madrid if they are to secure European football in the spring.
