Official : Spaniard, who worked with Chukwueze and Iwobi, appointed Aston Villa coach
Published: October 24, 2022Aston Villa on Monday confirmed the signing of Villarreal manager Unai Emery with effect from November 1, subject to a work permit.
Several English tabloids hinted that Emery who was in charge of Arsenal following the departure of Arsene Wenger in May 2018 is being considered for the vacant coaching job in the Midlands.
That confirmation came through on Monday evening with an announcement on the club's official website.
Emery has worked with two Super Eagles players, Alex Iwobi at Arsenal and Samuel Chukwueze at Villarreal while Arnaut Danjuma is a player with Nigerian roots that plays for the Dutch national team.
Emery won the UEFA Europa League thrice consecutively in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and also won the competition with Villarreal in 2021 defeating Manchester United in the final which Nigerian international Samuel Chukwueze could not play in due to injury.
Emery is expected to take charge of his Villarreal trainings this week before the move to England.
The Spaniard was said to have turned down the chance to take charge of Newcastle United after the takeover of the Magpies by the consortium from Saudi Arabia.
