'He does miss opportunities' - Ex-Celtic star slams Rangers striker Dessers ahead of Old Firm derby
Published: May 06, 2024
Speaking ahead of the Old Firm derby on Saturday, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has highlighted why Cyriel Dessers might cost Rangers amid their quest to win the Scottish Premiership for the first time since the 2020/2021 season.
The 29-year-old was in action for 90 minutes when Rangers defeated Kilmarnock on Sunday afternoon at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership Top Six Split but wasn't on the scoresheet.
He could have gotten himself on target in the second half when he attempted to nod James Tavernier's cross into the net but his effort was thwarted.
The miss wouldn't prove costly as the Gers had already taken a one-goal lead and would add two more goals to to their tally through Tom Lawrence and John Souttar respectively.
Dessers penchant to miss clear goalscoring opportunities has received a lot of backlash since his arrival at Ibrox and he was subjected to another criticism after Rangers victory over Kilmarnock on Sunday afternoon.
Sutton agreed with his fellow pundit Kris Boyd, on the Super Eagles forward's frailty in front of goal which he could prove costly for Philippe Clement's side particularly as they aim to win the League.
"The point Kris makes about Dessers, and he has banged on about it all season, he does miss opportunities,"he told Sky Sports via Rangers News
"He had two or three opportunities in this game to go first time. Most natural finishers would do that. He is always trying to chop back.
"We know how big the game is next week, everybody knows how big the game is next week. It can depend on a moment like that on your striker being decisive, whether Rangers win or lose the game."
The 55-time Scottish champions trail table toppers Celtic by three points but will have the opportunity to go level on points with them when they both meet at the Celtic Park.
