Nigerians hail ex-Chelsea and Arsenal striker after game-winning goal for France
Published: December 10, 2022
Defending champions France have moved on to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup after a hard-fought 2-1 win over England in a quarterfinal clash at Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday night.
Former Chelsea and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was the match-winner for France, heading in a superb cross from
Antoine Griezmann in the 78th minute.
France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni broke the deadlock in stunning fashion as he fired a shot into the bottom corner in the 17th minute.
Eight minutes into the second half, Harry Kane level matters from the penalty spot after Bukayo Saka was brought down in the box by a clumsy challenge from Tchouameni.
In the 84th minute, England had a chance to equalize for the second time in the game but Kane could not deliver in the hour of need as he uncharacteristically sent his shot over the bar.
Nigerian fans have hailed the performance of France's match-winner Giroud, with some noting that he is one of the most underrated strikers in the game.
