'Has performed consistently well' - Super Eagles legend urges Iwobi to stay at Everton
Published: December 14, 2022
Legendary Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh has urged Alex Iwobi to extend his stay at Everton.
The Hale End Academy product will enter the last one year of his contract with the Goodison Park outfit at the end of the season and has been offered a new deal.
Everton coach Frank Lampard has deployed Iwobi as a deep-lying playmaker partnered with a natural defensive midfielder in almost all the matches played by the Toffees this season.
The Super Eagles star is having an exceptional season with a goal involvement of seven (1 goal, 6 assists) in seventeen games across all competitions and was shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Month for September.
Oliseh noted that Iwobi struggled for form and playing time before the arrival of Lampard in January 2022.
"He has performed consistently well at Everton this season and you can see that he has been revitalised after taking up a new central midfield role since Frank Lampard joined the club last January,” Oliseh told The Punch.
"Prior to Lampard’s appointment, he had struggled to find form playing on the wing, and Evertonians had practically written him off as a wasted potential.
"Since scoring a last-minute winner against Newcastle last season, chants of Iwobi have been ringing around Merseyside ever since."
Iwobi made his international debut for the Super Eagles against Democratic Republic of Congo in October 2015 with Oliseh in the Nigeria dugout.
