New Super Eagles invitee George Ilenikhena has set his sights on winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), FIFA World Cup and other major honours with the Nigerian national team, following his maiden call-up ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
The former Monaco forward earned his maiden invitation to the tournament following a brilliant start to the campaign with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.
The 20-year-old, who was born in Nigeria, has impressed with his clinical finishing, scoring six goals and providing two assists in nine appearances across all competitions.
Speaking to Pooja, Ilenikhena expressed his excitement at representing the country and vowed to work hard in training and matches to prove his quality.
“To be honest, I am very happy and excited to be here to represent Nigeria. I am very proud to be here and show fans my quality in the team,” Ilenikhena said.
“I will give my best always to the training and the games to show everybody that I am ready to play and help the team.”
Ilenikhena revealed that his ambition with the Super Eagles is to achieve success and win every available trophy with the national team.
“To win everything with this team, the AFCON, World Cup, and everything I can play with this great team,” he added.
The attacker, who is honoured to represent Nigeria, said his parents were the first people he spoke to after receiving his invitation to the national team.
“It is a honour to represent the Super Eagles because I was born in Nigeria and to represent this country is a very big thing for me.”
“I called my dad and my mum because I was really happy and excited. They were really happy and proud of me.”
Ilenikhena also expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ collective ability to secure positive results in their upcoming qualifiers, stressing the importance of working together with head coach Eric Chelle
“We will give our best together with the team and the coach to win these two games and qualify,” he concluded.
Ilenikhena will be hoping to make his debut for the Super Eagles and deliver an impressive performance, while also aiming to open his international goals account if given the opportunity.
