Exciting central defender of African descent signs new Chelsea deal
Published: January 06, 2023Promising central defender of African descent Travis Akomeah has signed a new contract with Chelsea.
Chelsea insider Chelsea Youth has tweeted that Akomeah signed his first professional contract today on his 17th birthday.
Born in London and eligible to represent the Black Stars of Ghana, Akomeah joined the Blues from Watford in January 2022.
He has been described by Chelsea's official website as 'a very exciting central defender who has a great physical and imposing presence on the pitch'.
The center-back is very comfortable with playing out from the back.
Akomeah started the season as a first-year scholar - an intake that included two players of Nigerian descent Somto Boniface and Chinonso Chibueze.
This season, he has represented Chelsea in the U18 Premier League, Premier League 2, UEFA Youth League and U18 Premier League Cup.
Akomeah is provisionally cap-tied to England, after making his competitive debut for the Young Lions in a European U17 Championship qualifier against Georgia in October.
