Anglo-Nigerian young star reveals what has impressed him about Brentford striker Toney
Published: February 08, 2023Anglo-Nigerian young star Michael Olakigbe has revealed how Brentford striker Ivan Toney has impressed him and admitted that he wishes to imbibe the qualities of the 26-year-old in his game.
Toney is the first Brentford player to score a hat-trick in the English Premier League, scoring all three goals in a 3-1 win at Norwich City in 2021-2022, and has picked up where he left off last season with fourteen goals in twenty-one matches this term.
Olakigbe joined Brentford from west London neighbors Fulham in the summer of 2022 and is already knocking on the first team door on the back of his outstanding displays for the B team.
Thomas Frank, head coach of Brentford, included Olakigbe in the first team squad for a mid-season training camp in Spain, where he rubbed shoulders with first team stars such as Toney, Ben Mee, Ethan Pinnock and Frank Onyeka.
Olakigbe has had more chances to train with the first team players in London and they have welcomed him with open arms.
"Ivan is so confident. It’s something that I want to instill into me and when I speak with him you can tell that he’s so calculated and confident in his game," Olakigbe said to Brentford's official website.
"He has that belief that he can score goals whenever. He delivers consistently and he tells me to step on the pitch and show people who I am.
"To hear that from someone who has scored so many goals so far in his career really helps you."
A product of East Soccerbase Academy, Olakigbe has played several non-binding games for England U18s but remains eligible to play for the Flying Eagles.
