Average goals per game England's top 4 tiers : Arsenal product Akpom third, behind Haaland and Kane
Published: February 08, 2023Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Chuba Akpom has the third best goalscoring record in the top four divisions of English football so far in the 2022-2023 campaign, according to football statistics website Whoscored.com.
Akpom outranks the likes of Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Ivan Toney (Brentford) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) in average goals per game.
The Middlesbrough striker is having unarguably the best season of his career to date, scoring 16 goals in 23 matches to top the Championship scoring chart, an average of 0.70 goals per game.
Akpom has flourished since the appointment of Manchester United legend Michael Carrick as Boro manager, with an impressive thirteen goals in fifteen matches.
Of the players in England's top four divisions to make fifteen or more appearances, only Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland (1.25) and Tottenham Hotspur's England skipper Harry Kane (0.77) have averaged more goals per game than the Super Eagles hopeful.
Eleven of Akpom's sixteen goals came at the Riverside Stadium and the rest in away matches at Wigan Athletic, Preston North End, Hull City, Blackpool and Birmingham City, and the highlight of his season was netting his first hat-trick in the league against Wigan on Boxing Day.
Akpom has started 20 of the 23 matches he has played in this season's Championship and was in action for 1,776 minutes.
