Nigerian center back promoted to Arsenal first team training pre-Brentford
Published: February 10, 2023
Apart from Ethan Nwaneri, a second teenager of Nigerian descent trained with Arsenal's first team on February 9, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Spanish football tactician Mikel Arteta also ran the rule over central defender Zach Awe at London Colney on Thursday as the Arsenal first teamers stepped up their preparations for the visit of Brentford to the Emirates Stadium.
Awe, 19, was on U21 duties with Arsenal's development squad on Tuesday, playing for 82 minutes as the young Gunners suffered a 7-2 loss to PSV Eindhoven in their final game of the Premier League International Cup.
You have to go back to February 10, 2022 to find the last time Awe received a call-up for a first team game, against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium, where he was a non-playing substitute.
It remains to be seen whether or not he will be included in the matchday squad against the Bees, with Gabriel Magalhães, William Saliba, Rob Holding and Ben White ahead of him in Arteta's pecking order of central defenders.
In the current season, Awe has scored two goals in eighteen appearances combined in the Premier League 2 and Papa Johns Trophy.
Awe, who joined Arsenal at U8 level, signed his first professional contract in February 2021.
