Chelsea manager Potter admits he's working on adapting Madueke to the Premier League
Published: February 12, 2023
Chelsea manager Graham Potter handed a full Premier League debut to Chukwunonso Madueke in his side's 1-1 draw against West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
On his return from a three-game suspension, João Félix netted his first goal in Chelsea colours when he volleyed home a cross from Enzo Fernández in the 16th minute but Blues old boy Emerson Palmieri equalized in the 28th minute.
Madueke secured a spot in the starting lineup for the first time, twenty-two days after completing his transfer from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.
The England U21 international of Nigerian descent made the switch to Stamford Bridge for a transfer fee in the region of 40 million euros and made his debut off the bench in a goalless draw against Fulham on February 3.
Madueke was one of the five new signings named in the starting lineup against the Hammers, the others being Mykhaylo Mudryk, João Félix, Enzo Fernández and Benoît Badiashile.
Potter says is working on improving the fitness of the players returning from injury and adapting the new signings to the Premier League.
In quotes relayed by Football, London, Potter said at his post-match press conference : "You can also see where the work is. Which is getting Reece James up to speed, which is getting Ben Chilwell up to speed, which is getting Ruben Loftus-Cheek up to speed, which is getting Wesley Fofana up to speed, which is getting N'Golo Kante up to speed, which is adapting Mudryk to the Premier League, which is adapting Madueke into the Premier League, which is adapting Benoit Badiashile to the Premier League, which is adapting Joao Felix to the Premier League."
Madueke was substituted midway through the second half for Mason Mount in his first start for Chelsea.
