Chelsea 0 Southampton 1 : Madueke, Onuachu on show at Stamford Bridge
Published: February 18, 2023In a result few would have predicted, Premier League's basement team Southampton beat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu retained his place in the starting lineup of the Saints,, a week after he was handed his full Premier League debut by dismissed coach, Nathan Jones.
England U21 international of Nigerian descent Chukwunonso Madueke started from the off for Chelsea but his teammate Carney Chukwuemeka wasn't dressed for the game.
Kalidou Koulibaly was yellow carded as early as the fifth minute for a late challenge on Onuachu.
The Nigeria international had the first real chance of the game in the tenth minute when his header bounced of the post after James Ward-Prowse looped a ball in.
In the 14th minute, Madueke broke down the right flank before firing goalwards but his shot was pushed wide by Southampton goalkeeper Bazunu.
The game was halted momentarily due to Madueke being treated on the pitch but the winger was able to continue.
Southampton showed they were up to fight and took the lead in first half stoppage time as Ward-Prowse, with a wonderful free-kick, broke the deadlock .
Onuachu made way for Sékou Mara in the 59th minute and four minutes later, Madueke was replaced by Mykhailo Mudryk.
Chelsea searched and searched for an equaliser but the visitors were able to hold on to their slender lead thanks to the efforts of their defenders and goalkeeper.
