'I was in a similar position at Tottenham' - Walker-Peters reveals Tella asked him for advice
Published: April 20, 2023
Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters has revealed that Nathan Tella asked him for some advice prior to his loan move to Burnley and he has kept in touch with the Anglo-Nigerian winger.
Walker-Peters, a product of the Tottenham Hotspur academy, enjoyed a loan spell at Southampton in the second half of the 2019-2020 season, before joining the Saints on a permanent basis the following season.
Tella has followed the same path as the fringe England international by joining Burnley on loan last summer in order to play first team football on a regular basis.
The Super Eagles hopeful has flourished under Vincent Kompany and was influential as the Clarets sealed an immediate return to the Premier League, scoring 17 goals in 38 matches, while producing five assists.
Tella was crowned the winner of the PFA Vertu Motors Championship Fans’ Player of the Month award for March after scoring five goals in four games in the division.
"Definitely, I’ve sent him a few messages because he came to me last year before he went out and he asked me for some advice," Walker-Peters said to the Daily Echo.
I was in a similar position to him when I was back at Tottenham (Hotspur) so I gave him all the advice I could, and I am really happy it’s gone well for him."
Walker-Peters went on to say that he's pleased with the form of Tella since his temporary switch to Turf Moor.
"I think they’ve got a few more games left of their season so I hope his form continues and then we will see what happens with him.
“He’s on fire, I’m really happy for him. He’s a hard worker so he deserves everything he is getting."
Tella has approximately two years left on his contract with Southampton, whom he joined from Arsenal in 2017 following a successful trial.
