'Weird spot for Chelsea' - Nigerian-born ex-Man City CB reacts to Thiago Silva's comments
Published: April 21, 2023Nigerian-born former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has reacted to the recent comments made by Chelsea central defender Thiago Silva.
Silva sent a message to Chelsea owners shortly after the Blues' 4-0 loss on aggregate to holders Real Madrid in a Champions League quarterfinal clash at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
The Brazilian commented about Chelsea’s struggles this season with a crowded changing room and multiple manager changes.
That game against Los Blancos could be Silva's last in the Champions League with his contract expiring on June 30, 2024 and the Blues not in contention to feature in the competition next season.
Chelsea have had three managers this season Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard but nothing that the new owner Todd Boehly has done has worked despite his huge investment on players.
The Stamford Bridge outfit have brought in Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Noni Madueke, Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casedei, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabriel Slonina and Denis Zakaria.
Thiago Silva spoke about the bloated dressing room and players frustrated every week when they are not playing.
Reacting to Silva's comments, Onuoha said on ESPN FC : "They are just not playing well, he sees a lot of it. He sees a lot of intricate nature on a day-to-day basis.
"It's literally not working at all and when things don't work the idea is usually maybe we get some more players.
"That's the last thing that they need, I think they need to figure out what the long term strategy is, but ironically the long term strategy probably won't feature Thiago Silva.
"They are not planning on having him as a player in their team when he's in his 40s. It's a really weird spot for Chelsea.
"The new ownership coming in it does change the mentality a little bit but this feels excessive especially for a team that didn't need to have such a heavy level of investment so quickly given the fact that they were not a million miles away."
Chelsea have seven Premier League games to play this season and are in search of a new permanent coach ahead of the start of the 2023-2024 campaign.
