Official : Teenage Nigerian CB signs new deal at Liverpool; also eligible for England, Spain
Published: April 26, 2023
With a statement on their official website, Premier League giants Liverpool have announced that promising Nigerian central defender Wellity Lucky has signed a new deal with the club.
Lucky has put pen to paper on his first professional contract with the Anfield club, a reward for his excellent performances for the Reds youth teams.
Born in Zaragoza, Spain, Lucky arrived at the Liverpool Academy as an U13 player, rising through the ranks before making his competitive debut for the U18s in his final season as a schoolboy.
The 17-year-old has been a key player for Liverpool U18s when he's available for selection, and also featured in the prestigious FA Youth Cup this season.
Lucky has played non-binding games for England at U15 and U16 levels and is also eligible to wear the colors of his country of birth Spain.
He began the season as a first year scholar at Liverpool, along with another Spanish-born player of Nigerian descent Elijah Izobodo John.
The pair will be hoping to emulate Liverpool academy graduates Sheyi Ojo, Ovie Ejaria and David Amoo who made their first team debuts for Liverpool before moving on to pastures new.
