Speaking to reporters at the post-match press conference, manager Eric Chelle revealed why AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze was substituted during the second half of Nigeria's hard-fought 2-1 win over Madagascar in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday.
Around the hour mark, Chukwueze made way for Moses Usor, with the LASK forward making his senior debut for the three-time African champions.
The Super Eagles came from behind to secure the win, with Chukwueze's replacement scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal four minutes after his introduction.
Another debutant, George Ilenikhena, scored in first-half stoppage time to ensure both teams were level at the break after centre-back Ehsan Kari gave the visitors the lead against the run of play in the 16th minute.
Asked whether Chukwueze's substitution was tactical or a cause for concern, Chelle stressed that there was no injury issue involving the AC Milan winger.
The Malian tactician explained: "It was a tactical decision because, as you know, he finished the first half well. So I felt he was a little bit tired, and I wanted to bring some energy into the team. This is why the two Moses are on the field.
The two Moses referred to by the Super Eagles coach were Moses Simon and Moses Usor, who were introduced to provide greater attacking intensity.
"They bring this energy, they bring this one-on-one. You need sometimes something crazy on the field, some people who can bring one-on-one, one against two, one against three.
"They did well. It was only a tactical choice."
Chukwueze has played in four different Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, and the match against Madagascar was his 60th appearance for the Nigeria.
