Brighton monitoring Leicester academy product Bassey as alternative to Chelsea centre-back
Published: June 02, 2023
Leicester City academy product Calvin Bassey has been linked with a possible return to England in the summer transfer window.
According to sports journalist Charlie Parker-Turner, who has written for the Daily Mirror, Daily Express and the Daily Star. Brighton & Hove are monitoring the situation of Ajax Amsterdam defender Bassey with a view to a potential move.
Brighton have Bassey on their list of targets as an alternative to Chelsea central defender Levi Colwill, who spent the recently concluded season on loan at the Seagulls.
The American Express Community Stadium outfit want to re-engage Colwill for next season, this time on a full deal, but a bid of 30 million pounds was rejected by Chelsea, with the two-time European champions insisting he is not for sale.
Brighton are now on the lookout for a capable replacement and Bassey fits the bill considering the fact that he is a left-footed central defender just as Colwill and can also play as a left-back.
Ajax Amsterdam are in the search for a new head coach after recently parting company with John Heitinga.
Charlie Parker-Turner has informed that it's currently unclear as to whether Bassey will remain at Ajax beyond this season though a managerial change at the Amsterdam club should reveal more.
Signed from Glasgow Rangers last summer, Bassey, who is the most expensive Nigerian defender in history, is under contract at Ajax Amsterdam until June 30, 2027.
