'They like Osimhen' - Romano provides update on Chelsea's search for a new striker
Published: June 11, 2023
Providing an update on Chelsea's search for a new striker, Italian transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano has reiterated that Victor Osimhen is among the players on the radar of the Premier League giants.
None of Chelsea's strikers stood out in the recently concluded season, with Germany international Kai Havertz and England star Raheem Sterling their joint top scorers with nine goals apiece in all competitions.
RB Leipzig sensation Christopher Nkunku is expected to complete his move to Stamford Bridge in the coming days but the France international is not an out-and-out center forward, as Romano has pointed out.
Chelsea are considering various options for the number 9 role with Osimhen, who topped the Serie A goalscoring charts last season, on their wishlist, and they have also been linked with Atalanta's Rasmus Højlund.
Osimhen will not come cheap with Napoli valuing the Nigeria national teamer in the region of 130 million euros, so to finance a potential transfer, Chelsea would need to cash in on some players to raise funds
Speaking on Sunday evening, Romano said on Onamp: "They want to sign a new striker, the market is about opportunities. Maybe you get a call tomorrow.
"A striker is a priority for Chelsea, they will have Nkunku of course who can play in different positions, behind the striker and the number 9 in some moments. This is one of the reasons why João Félix is not staying at Chelsea.
"They are exploring very different options for example they like Victor Osimhen and they had some conversations also with Atalanta on Rasmus Højlund to be informed of the conditions of the deal.
"Chelsea are exploring many, many options but they have not made any decisions yet."
Osimhen has two years left on his contract with Napoli, whom he joined from Lille in 2020 for a club record fee of 70 million euros.
Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in acquiring the services of the 24-year-old this summer.
