Confirmed: Promising Anglo-Nigerian midfielder extends contract at Southampton
Published: June 17, 2023
Promising Anglo-Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwumene has been retained by relegated Premier League side Southampton for the 2023-2024 season.
According to the list of players retained by Southampton published on the official website of the Premier League, Iwumene has extended his scholarship deal.
The 18-year-old joined Southampton last summer and has done well to earn himself a new contract.
Last season, Iwumene represented Southampton U18s in the U18 Premier League, FA Youth Cup and U18 Premier League Cup, and also played for the B team in the Premier League 2 and Premier League Cup.
Overall, he racked up twenty six appearances for Southampton's youth teams over the course of the 2022-2023 season.
Iwuneme joined Southampton after he was spotted by one of their scouts whilst playing for Onside Academy in their yearly showcase in February 2022.
The talented teenager has worn the colours of Sutton United youth team in the past.
Meanwhile, Joe Aribo, Paul Onuachu, Samuel Edozie and Princewill Ehibhatiomhan still have valid contracts with Southampton and have been kept on for the 2023-2024 season.
Kazeem Olaigbe, a Belgium youth teamer of Nigerian descent, has been retained too but has been linked with an imminent move to Standard Liege.
