Nigeria-eligible CB ends 8-year association with Arsenal by signing for League Two's Bluebirds
Published: June 28, 2023Republic of Ireland youth teamer of Nigerian descent, Mazeed Ogungbo has ended an eight-year association with Arsenal after sealing a permanent transfer to League Two club Barrow A.F.C.
Ogungbo joined the Gunners in 2015, rising through the ranks before he was rewarded with his first professional contract in July 2021.
The Irish-Nigerian central defender has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Bluebirds that will keep him at the SO League Stadium until at least the end of the 2024-2025 season.
Ogungbo has some experience in the Football League, having worn the colours of Crawley Town last season,. making 23 appearances and scoring one goal for the fourth tier club in the League Two.
The 20-year-old made his competitive debut for Arsenal U18s while still a schoolboy, at the age of fifteen, and played his first game in the Premier League 2 before his 17th birthday.
In his first words as a player of Barrow, Ogungbo told the club's official website: "It feels amazing I’m excited to get going, to meet the boys and it’s been a great process in getting to know the Gaffer and the way he wants to play so I’m really looking forward to it.
“When I was on loan last season at Crawley, we played Barrow near the end of the season and from there things just started moving in the right direction and I’m really excited to come here and start."
Ogungbo was named in Arsenal's first team matchday squad on two occasions during the 2021-2022 season, in away matches at Crystal Palace and Southampton.
