Bordeaux owner gives update on the future of Super Eagles striker linked with Rangers
Published: June 29, 2023
Bordeaux owner Gérard Lopez has expressed his pessimism over the club reaching an agreement with Super Eagles forward Josh Maja over a new deal.
Maja's current contract with the club expires tomorrow after which he is free to join another club of his choice.
The contract situation of the Sunderland academy product has alerted Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers who have identified him as a potential signing to fill the void left by Colombian marksman Alfredo Morelos.
The 24-year-old joined the Ligue 2 side in 2019 from Sunderland on a four-and-a-half-year deal.
The one-cap Nigeria international couldn't hit the ground in his first few seasons at the club scoring 11 goals in all competitions.
He was subsequently sent out on loan twice, first to to his youth club Fulham and then Stoke City but wasn't signed on a permanent deal.
Maja returned to his parent club at the start of last season and went on to have his most productive season for Bordeaux in front of goal, scoring 17 in all competitions.
With the one-cap Nigeria international turning his career on the head last season, Bordeaux are keen on tying him down to a new contract.
"We had discussions. We really like Josh, he was also important during the season. He is a player who has opportunities elsewhere," Lopez told France Bleu, via Girondins4ever.
"We made a proposal, it's not finished yet, but here it is, it may be more complicated. Yes, you could say that I am less optimistic than Stian Gregersen".
