Super Eagles-eligible player reveals conversation he had with Chelsea coach over future
Published: July 19, 2023
Super Eagles-eligible player Carney Chukwuemeka has revealed the outcome of the conversation he had with Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino over his future at Stamford Bridge.
Born in Eisenstadt, Austria, the 19-year-old signed for Chelsea in 2022 from Aston Villa.
The future of the England youth international has been in doubt since the sacking of German manager Thomas Tuchel, who promised him first team action when he arrived at Stamford Bridge.
However, the young midfielder made his debut in a 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers under Graham Potter, who replaced Tuchel.
He made fifteen appearances in his first season at Chelsea, logging 362 minutes in all competitions.
Despite showing glimpse of his qualities, Chukwuemeka was touted to be heading on loan ahead of the start of the new campaign.
Seeking clarification on his future, the Anglo-Nigerian held a meeting with the Argentine coach to discuss plans for the new season.
Giving details of the meeting, he expressed his desire to stay at Chelsea beyond the summer.
Chukwuemeka told Sky Sports via Football.London: "He has come in and said that he sees the talent, that he wants to help develop me.
"Whether that's in a month or six months, but I want to stay and prove to everyone what I can do and help the club.
"At the end of the day, we will sit down, come together and decide what's best for me."
Chukwuemeka's rivals for a starting spot in midfield, namely Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N'Golo Kanté, Mateo Kovacic, Tiemoué Bakayoko and Denis Zakaria, have either been sold or released, thereby brightening his chances of breaking into Chelsea's starting XI next term if he is not loaned out to continue his development.
