Barcelona-trained LB assists Boniface to score on striker's debut for Bayer Leverkusen

In their first competitive game of the 2023-2024 season, Bayer Leverkusen got off to a good start with an 8-0 victory against  Regionalliga Nord club FC Teutonia 05 Ottensen in the first round of the DFB Cup on Saturday.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, who extended his contract with the Black and Reds before the start of the season, handed a full debut to Nigerian striker Victor Boniface.

Boniface was courted by a plethora of big five European League clubs this summer but opted to continue his career with the five-time Bundesliga runners-up, signing a five-year contract, until June 30, 2028.

After Edmond Tapsoba opened the scoring in the 16th minute, Boniface doubled the advantage three minutes before halftime - his first goal in an official game for Bayer Leverkusen.

The new Bayer Leverkusen number 22 finished off a counter-attack, slotting home after he was set up by Barcelona-reared left-back Alejandro Grimaldo.

Bayer Leverkusen's other scorers were Florian Wirtz, Amine Adli, Jeremie Frimpong, Adam Hlozek (2) and Jonas Hofmann.

Boniface will be looking forward to making his Bundesliga debut when Bayer Leverkusen take on RB Leipzig at the BayArena on Saturday, August 19.

The 22-year-old earned himself a move to Bayer Leverkusen after a glittering season that saw him register 29 goal involvements (17 goals, 12 assists) for Royale Union Saint Gilloise.
