'Physical but not quite as mobile' - Pundit rates and slates Rangers striker Dessers
Published: August 16, 2023
BBC pundit Steven Thompson has delivered his verdict on the performance of Cyriel Dessers during Rangers' 1-1 draw with Servette in a UEFA Champions League third round qualifier in Geneva on Tuesday night.
Rangers manager Michael Beale bowed to the pressure of the fans by omitting Dessers from the starting lineup to face the Swiss Super League team.
The Nigeria international, who started the previous three games played by the Light Blues following his transfer from Cremonese this summer, was booed by his own fans for his below-par performance against Livingston.
Beale made three changes from the weekend's 4-0 rout of Livingston, two of which saw Leon Balogun and Dessers drop to the bench.
Against Servette, Dessers came off the bench in the 63rd minute as a replacement for Danilo with the game finely poised at 1-1 .
The Super Eagles star had chances to put the game out of sight but sent a header inches over the bar from a Raskin cross in the 72nd minute before seeing his close-range effort hit the woodwork in the 79th minute.
Thompson admitted that he was impressed with the physical presence offered by Dessers but wants to see more from him and another summer arrival Danilo.
In quotes relayed by Daily Record, Thompson said: "It is too early to make any judgments really just now. You are better placed to make a judgment on them in a couple months time.
"But I felt as though Danilo struggled in the game, to have an impact. It didn't really suit him and he misses the chance.
"Probably his confidence and head probably goes down a wee bit. Dessers offers something different, more physical but not quite as mobile."
Rangers have progressed to the playoff round of the Champions League and will host PSV Eindhoven at the Ibrox Stadium next week.
