'Can play in that No. 10 position' - Pundit backs Olise to step into the shoes of injured Chelsea star Nkunku
Published: August 16, 2023
Sky Sports pundit Zac Djellab reckons that Michael Olise could become Chelsea's first-choice number 10 in the absence of Christopher Nkunku who sustained an ankle injury during the Blues' pre-season game against Borussia Dortmund, which will rule him out for an extended period.
Olise is on the verge of joining Chelsea after the Blues activated the 35 million pounds release clause in his contract with Crystal Palace.
He was previously a schoolboy at Chelsea before joining Reading, from where he moved to Crystal Palace in 2021.
The former Super Eagles invitee became one of the best wingers in the Premier League last season, registering 13 goal contributions for Crystal Palace.
While the 21-year-old is primarily a right winger, he can also play as a number 10, which is one of the reasons why he is highly coveted.
With Mauricio Pochettino favoring a 4-2-3-1 formation, Djellab believes Olise could make the number 10 position his own in the absence of Nkunku who was supposed to play there.
"Olise is obviously a right winger that can play in that number 10 position. They do have Raheem Sterling, they do have Madueke who is also at times out with injuries, they could do with another back up especially someone that can play in that number 10 position," Djellab told Sky Sports' Football Daily
"Nkunku is out for the moment, you think that's where maybe he plays. Conor Gallagher can also feature there as well. Someone like Olise can make that position his own especially in the next couple of months whilst Christopher Nkunku is out."
