Official: Manchester United include four players of Nigerian descent in PDP group
Published: August 16, 2023
Through their official website, Premier League giants Manchester United have confirmed the club's Professional Development Phase (PDP) group for the 2023-2024 season, with four players of Nigerian descent making the roster.
Shola Shoretire is the most notable name on the list and joining him are Victor Musa, Habeeb Ogunneye and Maxi Oyedele.
With the exception of Musa who is in the first year of his scholarship, the aforementioned players are on professional contracts at Manchester United.
The four young players got playing time on the opening day of the new academy season, with Musa and Ogunneye starting for the U18s in their 4-0 win versus Middlesbrough while Shoretire and Oyedele went the distance in the five-goal thriller against Crystal Palace.
Shoretire and Oyedele were loaned out to Bolton Wanderers and Altrincham FC respectively in the second half of last season to get a taste of first-team football on a regular basis, and trained with Manchester United's senior players at the start of pre-season preparations.
The Anglo-Nigerian players are eligible to be registered on Manchester United's Premier League roster after the close of the summer transfer window as they are all classed as U21 players.
Manchester United's Professional Development Phase seeks to provide the players with the opportunity to seamlessly transition between the club's U18 and U21 sides, with the ultimate aim of preparing them for a career in senior football.
