Homegrown player rule: Pundit reveals a move for Nigerian striker would help Tottenham massively
Published: August 17, 2023
Football London pundit Rob Guest believes Gift Orban will have no problem playing for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League if he moves to the club this summer amidst their non-homegrown quota crisis.
The Nigerian striker alongside Dusan Vlahovic, Romelu Lukaku and Brennan Johnson have all been linked with Spurs following the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.
The hindrance facing the north London-based club in signing the Gent striker is his price tag which the club deems excessive.
Tottenham are also faced with the challenge of reducing their non-homegrown quota from 20 to 17 which is the maximum allowed by the Premier League rules.
Guest has suggested that the name of Orban can be omitted from the Premier League squad and yet still be eligible to play for Ange Postecoglou's side in the competition.
"As he was born on July 17, 2002, Orban would not have to be registered in the club's Premier League squad but he would still be eligible to feature in the competition as he would instead be part of the under-21 list due to his age," he wrote on Football.London.
"However, this would only be for the 2023/24 season as the following campaign he would have to be included as a non-homegrown player as the Premier League rules will stipulate that under-21 players will have had to be born on or after the 1 January 2003 to make the list.
"Not only potentially signing a very good goalscorer in Orban, a move for the Gent ace would also help Tottenham out massively when it comes to submitting their 25-man squad for the season."
The 21-year-old Orban has continued his brilliant form in front of goal this season netting a hat trick in Gent's 5-0 hammering of
Pogon Szczecin in their Europa Conference League third-round qualifier last week.
