Awoniyi on fire: Nottingham Forest striker sets Nigerian record in 2-1 win against Sheffield United
Published: August 18, 2023
Taiwo Awoniyi was on the scoresheet for Nottingham Forest in their 2-1 win over Sheffield United on matchday two of the Premier League played at the City ground on Friday night.
According to OPTA, the 26-year-old has now become the Nigerian with the longest-scoring streak in the Premier League after scoring in six consecutive games, with Mohammed Salah and Emmanuel Adebayor being the only African players with a longer streak
Awoniyi started his run against Southampton on May 8, followed by strikes against Chelsea, Arsenal and Crystal Palace, and has scored twice in as many games in the new season.
The Nigerian International has also equaled the 26-year-old record of Stan Collymore of scoring in six consecutive Premier League games for Nottingham Forest.
The former Liverpool forward got his goal in the 3rd minute when he headed the ball into the net from Serge Aurier's swift cross.
Gustavo Hamer restored parity for the away side in the 48th minute before Chris Wood scored the winner in the 89th minute.
Awoniyi has now registered 2 goals in 2 Premier League games for Steve Cooper's side this season.
While the former U17 World Cup winner was involved for the two-time European champions, his compatriots, Ola Aina and Emmanuel Dennis were omitted from the matchday squad.
Nottingham Forest will next face Manchester United at Old Trafford in their next Premier League fixture on August 26.
