Everton coach reveals exact nature of the injury suffered by Iwobi in 52nd consecutive PL start
Published: August 20, 2023
Everton manager Sean Dyche has revealed the exact nature of the injury suffered by Alex Iwobi during his side's 4-0 loss to Aston Villa in a Premier League clash at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.
In the 18th minute, Aston Villa captain John McGinn opened the scoring from close range and Douglas Luiz doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 24th minute.
Leon Bailey fired home in the 51st minute to make it 3-0, before substitute Jhon Durán wrapped up the scoring with fifteen minutes left on the clock.
Iwobi was named in the Toffees starting lineup for the 52nd game in the Premier League, consisting of the last 12 games played by the Merseyside club in 2021-2022, 38 last term, and 2 in the new campaign.
Four minutes into the second half, Iwobi went to the ground clutching his leg and was unable to continue with Everton trailing 2-0.
The Nigeria international was spotted making his way down the tunnel with an Everton physiotherapist, leaving Everton temporarily down to ten men.
According to Everton's official website, Dyche revealed post-match that Iwobi has suffered a hamstring injury and the midfielder will be checked in the coming days.
The Nigeria Football Federation will be monitoring the fitness of Iwobi as the player is in contention to be named on the Super Eagles roster for next month's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against São Tomé and Príncipe.
