'Too poor' - Ex-Chelsea captain Desailly blames one West Ham player for Chukwuemeka's goal
Published: August 20, 2023
Former Chelsea captain Marcel Desailly believes that West Ham defender Kurt Zouma was to blame for Carney Chukwuemeka's goal in the first half of the London derby on Sunday evening.
After their recruitments this summer including the acquisition of Moisés Caicedo for a Premier League transfer record, The Blues are down to fourteenth position in the standings with just one point from their opening two games after a 3-1 loss to West Ham.
Nayef Aguerd gave West Ham a dream start, heading home in the 7th minute, but Chukwuemeka in his first back-to-back start for Chelsea, restored parity in spectacular fashion - his first goal in Chelsea colours.
In the 28th minute, the England U20 international of Nigerian descent, with a little drop of the shoulder, cut inside onto his right foot and hit an unstoppable drive past West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
Michail Antonio restored West Ham's lead in the 53rd minute and Paquetà added a third from the spot in stoppage time
Desailly praised Chukwuemeka for the quality of his goal but criticized Zouma for his poor defending in the build-up to the equaliser.
Speaking on Premier League Productions at the end of the game, the 1998 World Cup winner said: "Very poor defending, too poor from (Kurt) Zouma with that experience that he has.
"As a defender he has to be ready for it. He's stuck sitting on his feet and you cannot defend properly.
"An this gives a chance to Chelsea with Chukwuemeka. I like him because he's like an assist who's come on stage, 'now it's my moment to shine'.
"You see the dribbling, he's sure about what he's going to do, he's clinical."
Chukwuemeka was replaced by Mudryk at the start of the second half after suffering an injury just before halftime.
