Off the mark: Atletico Madrid-owned striker Omorodion gets his first Alaves goal on full debut
Published: September 29, 2023
Samuel Omorodion opened his goalscoring account for Deportivo Alavés as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Celta de Vigo in a La Liga match played at Abanca Balaídos on Thursday evening.
The Super Eagles-eligible striker joined Atletico Madrid from Granada on August 21 and five days later, he was loaned out to Alaves to continue his development.
Omorodion was handed his starting debut against Celta de Vigo after making four appearances for the Basque Country club off the bench.
After an own goal by Rafa Marín broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, the Spanish-born Nigerian striker scored his first goal in a Glorioso shirt at minute 73 when he tapped in after a delightful pass by Javi López on the left wing.
In the 84th minute, only a goalline clearance prevented Omorodion from scoring what would have been the winning goal.
The 19-year-old scored on his La Laga debut on the opening day of the season as Granada held Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw.
Last season, he mustered 18 goals for Granada's reserve team and those performances caught the eye of the top clubs in Spain.
Born in Melilla, Spain, Omorodion became provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth on July 4, 2023 when he came off the bench against Iceland at the U19 Euro.
He has been promoted to Spain U21s for the 2023-2024 season, making his debut for the age group in an U21 Euro qualifier against Scotland this month.
