Golden Eaglets-eligible striker sees red two weeks after scoring hat-trick for Arsenal youth team
Published: October 07, 2023
For the first time in his career since his switch to Arsenal, Golden Eaglets-eligible striker Chido Obi was sent off as the Gunners came from behind to secure a hard-fought 2-1 win over Leicester City in an U18 Premier League fixture on Saturday afternoon.
Exactly two weeks ago, Obi grabbed all the headlines after scoring his first competitive hat-trick for Arsenal youth teams in a 4-1 win over Southampton U18.
Obi started in attack against the Foxes and was flanked by another Golden Eaglets-eligible player Daniel Oyetunde and
Seb Ferdinand.
The Denmark underage international of Nigerian descent came close to breaking the deadlock in the 37th minute but his close range effort went just wide of the post.
Leicester City made their numerical advantage count after Obi was sent off in the 48th minute as Kaleb Dyke opened the scoring in the 64th minute.
But the young Gunners showed resilience and turned it around in the closing minutes as Michal Rosiak equalized with a trademark free kick in the 79th minute before Omari Benjamin came off the bench to net the winner in the 84th minute.
Midfielder Zac Shuaib, who is eligible to play international football for Nigeria, England, Spain and India, entered the game as a substitute in the 66th minute
Obi has scored 5 goals in six matches for Denmark's U17 national team and is in contention to be provisionally cap-tied to the Scandinavians this month.
The 15-year-old has been named on Denmark's roster for the European U17 Championship qualifiers against Lithuania and Georgia next week.
