'Played as a midfielder' - Italy coach hails the versatility of Tottenham defender Udogie
Published: October 09, 2023
Italy coach Luciano Spalletti has revealed that the versatility of Tottenham Hotspur defender Destiny Udogie means he is capable of playing as a midfielder.
The Verona native of Nigerian descent has received his first-ever call-up to Italy's senior national team ahead of upcoming 2024 European Championship qualifiers against Malta and England.
Udogie started out his career as an attacking midfielder before moving into the wingback position during his time at Udinese, where he spent two seasons.
The 20-year-old has now become one of the most exciting young left-backs in the Premier League.
He held his own against some of the best right wingers in the English top flight, Manchester United's Antony, Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Arsenal's Bukayo Saka, which is a testament to his qualities.
Spalletti has admitted that Udogie can take up a role in midfield in the Euro qualifiers if the need arises.
In quotes relayed by Tuttomercatoweb, the former Napoli gaffer stated: "And if you have too many who don't play it creates a little too much discomfort on the journey from the hotel to the stadium.
"Then there are those who can cover multiple roles: Udogie played as a midfielder and can also be used in that role".
Udogie will not be cap-tied to the Italians even if he participates in the two competitive matches against the Island Nation and Three Lions, meaning the door is still open for him to play for the Super Eagles.
