'He has an important engine' - Italy boss hails Tottenham defender Udogie ahead of England clash
Published: October 17, 2023
Italy coach Luciano Spalletti has backed Destiny Udogie to make an impact for his side when they face England in a 2024 European Championship qualifier on Tuesday night at Wembley Stadium.
Due to the 20-year-old's promising start to the season for Tottenham in the Premier League, Spalletti decided to promote him from the Italy U21s to the senior side.
The former Napoli boss handed the Spurs left-back his debut in their 4-0 over Malta last Saturday at the Stadio San Nicola where he came on for Inter Milan left-back Federico Dimarco in the 79th minute.
The Azzurri boss believes Udogie can make a difference for his side when they square up against the Three Lions
"Udogie has everything, " Spalletti told Sky Sport Italia via Metro UK.
"Like all young players, he needs experience, but he has an important engine and in a game where physicality and strength can make the difference, he can help us."
While Spalletti has come out to pass a vote of confidence on the Tottenham rising star, it remains to be seen whether he will be given a starting or substitute role against Gareth Southgate's side.
Should Udogie feature for Italy against England, he will still be eligible to feature for Nigeria under the FIFA rules.
