Golden Eaglets-eligible central defender makes his competitive debut for Arsenal youth team
Published: October 22, 2023
Golden Eaglets-eligible central defender Samuel Chinedu made his competitive debut for Arsenal U18s in their 1-0 road win against Middlesbrough in a Premier League Cup clash on Saturday.
Will Sweet netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 61st minute when he headed in from a corner.
Another Golden Eaglets-eligible player in Daniel Oyetunde started and was in action for almost the entire duration of the game.
Oyetunde, who was shown a yellow card in the 68th minute, made way for Chinedu in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Chinedu is in his final season as a schoolboy at Arsenal and becomes eligible to sign a scholarship deal in July 2024.
Danish-Nigerian attacker Chido Obi was not called up for the trip to Middlesbrough because he is serving a suspension after he received a straight red card in an U18 Premier League fixture against Leicester City before the international break.
Obi became provisionally cap-tied to Denmark on October 11, 2023 when he started against Lithuania in a 2024 European U17 Championship qualifier.
Arsenal have four points from their opening two games in Group B of the Premier League Cup and their final group encounter is against Derby County on November 25.
