One to watch: 2004-born striker Omorodion scores third La Liga goal in Alaves 1-1 draw v Villarreal
Published: October 22, 2023
Spain U21 international of Nigerian descent Samuel Omorodion is living up to the billing as one of the exciting young players in La Liga, having netted his third goal of the season in Deportivo Alavés' 1-1 draw with Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica on Sunday evening, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The 2004-born striker opened the scoring two minutes into the second half when he slotted past the goalkeeper from inside the box after a perfectly weighted pass by Jon Guridi.
Alaves' lead lasted less than twenty minutes as Gerard Moreno converted a penalty awarded after Aleksandar Sedlar handled the ball in the penalty box.
Omorodion joined Atlético Madrid for a fee of 6 million euros in the summer transfer window and it was decided that the best way not to slow his progress was to loan him out to Alaves, with no purchase option included in the agreement.
The 19-year-old was a surprise inclusion in Granada's starting lineup on the opening day of the season against Atlético Madrid and he repaid his manager's faith in him by getting on the scoresheet on his La Liga debut.
He had a great performance for Alaves in their 1-1 draw with Celta de Vigo on September 28, capping it off with a well-taken goal.
Omorodion mustered 18 goals in 33 appearances for Granada's reserve team in 2022-2023, helping them secure promotion to the Primera Federación – the third tier of Spanish football.
The Melilla native made his first competitive appearance for Spain's youth teams at the 2023 U19 Euro.
