'Liverpool are not in the market for a No.9' - Expert confirms Reds are not pursuing Chelsea target Osimhen
Published: October 25, 2023
Liverpool transfer insider Neil Jones has ruled out the possibility of Victor Osimhen moving to Anfield.
The Super Eagles forward had been reported to have reached personal terms with the six-time European champions but the report has been rubbished by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
Osimhen is highly coveted by Premier League giants Chelsea while other European heavyweights could also consider acquiring his services if he is to leave Napoli next summer.
His future with Napoli is circled with uncertainty as he has failed to sign a new contract and the relationship between him and the Italian outfit appears to have gone sour in recent weeks.
According to Jones, Liverpool are stacked in the central forward position and it is unlikely that they move for the Nigerian striker.
"Victor Osimhen has been linked with Liverpool in recent weeks, but I would be very skeptical about this deal. The Napoli striker is clearly a superb player, but reports that a deal has already been agreed with the Reds are wide of the mark, and I'd be surprised if he was to end up at Anfield as things stand," he wrote in his Daily Briefing column via Caughtoffside.
"Liverpool are not in the market for a No.9. They have Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo to play that position at the moment, and all three of those players have the full faith of Jurgen Klopp.
"All are 26 or under, and seen as long-term players for the club".
Although Napoli President, Aurelio De Laurentiis is still hopeful that Oismhen can commit his long-term future to the club, he has also hinted that they might consider selling him next summer.
