'Does not look like a 15yo' - Denmark U17 coach not surprised Arsenal striker Obi made UYL debut
Published: October 25, 2023
Denmark U17 coach Jesper Mikkelsen sees potential in Arsenal striker Chidozie Obi-Martin and is not surprised that the talented schoolboy made his UEFA Youth League debut for the north London club against Sevilla on Tuesday.
Aged 15 years and 329 days, Obi became the fourth youngest Arsenal player to make his debut in the UEFA Youth League after he was named in the starting lineup against the Spanish opponents.
Obi has forced his way into Arsenal U18s starting lineup in the 2023-2024 campaign and has repaid manager Jack Wilshere's faith in him with three goals in four appearances in the U18 Premier League.
On the international stage, the Danish-born forward of Nigerian descent has notched 7 goals in nine matches for Denmark's U17 national team since making his debut for the age group in August 2023.
When asked if he was surprised to see Obi make his UEFA Youth League debut, Jesper Mikkelsen told bold.dk: "No, it doesn't really.
"After all, he has played for their U18 team, although he can still play in what is called the U16 over there. So they somehow have a priority in having him along.
"I also see FCK having year 07 players on their team in the Youth League, so no, I'm not.
"Chido does not look like a 15-year-old. He has some exciting offensive qualities and he has great physical potential."
Obi is already guaranteed a scholarship deal at Arsenal for the 2024-2025 season.
