'Looks a bit more than tiredness' - Leicester boss provides Ndidi update that will worry Peseiro, Super Eagles fans
Published: October 27, 2023
Wilfred Ndidi has been added to the Super Eagles injury list less than three weeks before their crucial World Cup qualifier against Lesotho following the latest update on the condition of the central midfielder by Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca.
Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro is unlikely to be without Italian-based duo Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen for the internationals in November, while defenders Zaidu Sanusi and Semi Ajayi, and striker Taiwo Awoniyi are recovering from injuries.
For the first time this season, Ndidi was not named in a Leicester City matchday squad as they registered a 1-0 win against Sunderland on Tuesday and it was initially thought he was rested for the game having played sixteen matches for club and country this campaign.
Maresca has provided a fresh update on Ndidi that will worry Peseiro and Super Eagles fans, with the Italian revealing that the Nigeria number 4 will spend some time on the sidelines due to a muscular problem.
The Nigeria international is not available for selection for Leicester City's Championship tie with Queens Park Rangers at MATRADE Loftus Road Stadium on Saturday.
Addressing the media ahead of his side's trip to the English capital, Maresca said: "The only one is Wilf. That looks a bit more than tiredness as we thought at the beginning, so he probably has to stay out some days or weeks.
"It's not an important problem, just a muscular problem that we thought was not important. It's not big, but I think at least for some days or weeks he going to be out."
Leicester City have benefited from Ndidi playing in a more advanced role in midfield, with the Nigerian having a hand in seven goals (3 goals, 4 assists) - something he had not managed in a single-season in a Foxes shirt before the 2023-2024 campaign.
