EFL Trophy: Shoretire scores brace but Manchester United lose seven-goal thriller
Published: November 01, 2023
Newcastle-born Nigerian attacking midfielder Shola Shoretire struck a brace but it was not enough as Manchester United were beaten 4-3 by the first team of League Two cub Salford City in an EFL Trophy encounter at the Peninsula Stadium in Greater Manchester United on Tuesday night.
The Anglo-Nigerian starlet is unlikely to be given minutes by manager Erik ten Hag tonight when the first team face off with his hometown club Newcastle United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup given that he went the distance against Salford City.
Just seven minutes into the contest, Shoretire wheeled away in celebration after breaking the deadlock with a curled effort at the back post but the home team netted twice in the first half to overturn Manchester United's opener.
Less than two minutes after the restart, Omari Forson equalized with a neat finish before Shoretire netted his second goal of the game in the 51st minute.
Matthew Lund scored twice inside the final ten minutes, both from the penalty spot to complete his hat-trick and secure a win for the Ammies.
Though he has been spotted training with the senior players several times this season, Shoretire has yet to receive a call-up for a Manchester United first team game in 2023-2024.
In nine appearances for the development squad across all competitions, he has directly participated in eight goals (5 goals, 3 assists).
