'It's frustrating for him' - Nottingham Forest manager reveals Awoniyi's injury situation is being managed
Published: November 04, 2023
Ahead of the weekend's game against Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper has provided an update on the fitness of Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi.
Despite struggling with a persistent injury, Awoniyi might still feature in the upcoming match against Aston Villa this weekend.
Awoniyi, who has been a standout player for Forest since his arrival last year, faced a setback in his first season due to injuries.
Although he made a strong comeback, scoring six goals in his last four games of the 2022-2023 camapign, this season has been challenging for him in terms of fitness.
His injury troubles escalated just before the international break, causing him to miss the games against Crystal Palace and Luton Town.
After a four-week absence, Awoniyi returned to action against Liverpool last week, coming off the bench in the 69th minute. However, his participation in the upcoming game against Aston Villa remains uncertain.
Speaking about Awoniyi's condition, Cooper expressed the complexities of managing the player's injury.
"Taiwo is a player that we have to manage, he's in a bit of complex situation with his injury, and it's an ongoing one and it'll be for a little while," Cooper told reporters.
"It's frustrating for him more than anybody else because he was doing so well and this has really held him back.
"It's not been as simple as he's back training and he's fully fit. It's something that going to be a managing process for a little bit of time now so we'll see if he's available for the weekend.
"We hope he is but it could go either way and we'll see."
Nottingham Forest, currently facing a six-game winless streak, are in dire need of a victory to avoid falling into the relegation zone.
Awoniyi's involvement would undoubtedly bolster their chances, but his participation remains in question as the team prepares for the crucial match against Aston Villa.
