'No disrespect to Keane, Vieira' - Chelsea icon Mikel names the most important player in the Premier League
Published: November 11, 2023
Chelsea icon Obi Mikel has named Manchester City midfielder Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, known as Rodri as the Premier League's most important player.
The Spanish international moved to the Etihad Stadium in 2019 from Atlético Madrid as a replacement for Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho who would leave three years after his arrival.
Rodri has grown immensely in stature within the Citizens' squad and established himself as one of the most vital players for Pep Guardiola's side, playing as the first-choice defensive midfielder
He played a significant role in Manchester City's treble triumph last season and was named the UEFA Champions League Player of the Season alongside being enlisted in the PFA Team of the Year.
Mikel has been blown away by the performances of the 27-year-old and has chosen him as the Premier League's most important player.
"No disrespect to Roy Keane, he is a legend of the game and no disrespect to Patrick Vieira, he was my legend growing up, I used to watch him a lot play for Arsenal, but what Rodri is doing right now, the possession, the way he attacks, getting into the box creating chances, defending, tackling, everything, building up, everything goes through this guy.
"For me, like you've said, he's the most important player in the Premier League," Mikel said on the The Obi One Podcast.
Rodri has made 221 appearances across all competitions for Manchester City and has won three Premier League titles and a Champions League.
